Mediterranean foods are some of the tastiest and healthiest foods in the world. Everyday more people who are looking to lose weight safely or just want to live a healthier lifestyle are turning to the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, so it is a time well tested proven diet that is safe and easy to follow.

A study by the Harvard School of Public Health researchers reveals that such foods may bestow their life prolonging effects when eaten together as part of an overall balanced diet. Researchers have found that Greeks who consume a traditional mediterranean diet have significantly lower mortality rates than Greeks of a similiar age who have swithced over to a western diet of more meat, dairy products, margarine.

Compared to most diets, the mediterranean diet contains less cholesteral with more healthy fats that contain the beneficial linolenic acid, which is a type of omega 3 fatty acid. The fat sources include olive oil, canola oil, as well as almonds, pecans, hazel nuts, and walnuts. Fish which is a main supply of omega 3 fatty acid, is eaten on a regular basis. More than half of the fat calories in the mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fats.( mainly from olive oil ) Monounsaturated fat doesn't raise blood cholesteral levels the way saturated fat does.

The key components of the mediterranean diet include.

 * Eating a generous amount of fruit and vegetables.

 * Consuming healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil.

 * Eating small portions of nuts.

  * Drinking red wine in moderation.

  * Consuming very little red meat.

   * Eating fish on a regular basis.

   * Rice and certain types of pasta.

Bread is also a staple of the mediterranean diet. The grain used to make the bread contains very few unhealthy trans fats.  The bread is dipped in olive oil instead of having butter or margarine, which contains saturated or trans fats, spread on it. For snacks have carrots, apples, bananas, brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, or a fruit salad. This diet can be modified to a certain degree. If you are unable to buy some of the foods in this diet because of your geographic limitations, adjustments can be made to suit the food source and availability.

There has been immense amount of research done on the Mediterranean diet by universities, research institutes, and heart foundations. They have found the Mediterranean diet helps improve energy while reducing heart disease and certain types of cancer.  Unlike many of the fad and crash diets that have long become common place in our society today, the Mediterranean diet is a safe and common sense diet that delivers weight loss in a healthy way while allowing you to still enjoy  great tasting food.
